Two decades of MADEIRADiG: another edition of the electronic and experimental music festival kicks off on 28 November
From 28 November to 3 December, MADEIRADiG will once again celebrate Portuguese and international electronic and experimental music. Promoted by the Agência de Promoção da Cultura Atlântica (APCA), in partnership with the cultural agency Digital in Berlin, the next edition marks the festival’s 20th anniversary with a heavyweight line-up spread across Calheta and Ponta do Sol, on the west coast of Madeira Island, occupying the MUDAS – Madeira Museum of Contemporary Art, the John dos Passos Cultural Centre and the Estalagem da Ponta do Sol.
This year’s attractions include Polish guitarist Raphael Rogiński, in charge of the inaugural concert at the John dos Passos Cultural Centre; sound artist Christina Kubisch; Norwegian saxophonist Bendik Giske; American guitarist David Grubbs; Evicshen; NikNak; piper Brighde Chaimbeul; and the experimental trio Contagious, made up of Andrea Neumann, Sabine Ercklentz and Mieko Suzuki. In addition, in a commission from gnration, Culturgest, Festival Tremor and MADEIRADiG, Nik Cold Void and MAOTIK present a new audiovisual piece: Beyond Echoes explores themes such as the passage of time, the concept of infinity and the fragile harmony between order and chaos. The festival also features Simão Costa, a Portuguese pianist and transdisciplinary artist who investigates the intersections between art, science and technology through interactive musical and visual compositions.
MADEIRADiG’s programme traditionally includes concerts at 9:30pm between the John dos Passos Cultural Centre and the MUDAS auditorium, and the usual after sessions at the Estalagem da Ponta do Sol. Some of the activities are free, while others require a ticket. For more information, see the event’s official website.
