Sofia Mascate wins UmbigoLAB x Artworks – No Entulho

Sofia Mascate has been announced as the winner of the UmbigoLAB x Artworks – No Entulho art residency open call.

The jury, comprising members from Umbigo, ArtWorks, Diogo da Cruz, Filipa Rocha Nunes, and Fundação Millennium bcp, reviewed 24 eligible applications and found that Sofia Mascate’s proposal was outstanding. Her research into the expanded field of painting and the work of Josefa d’Óbidos, along with her willingness to explore the experimental possibilities offered by the ArtWorks – No Entulho art residency in terms of reusing industrial materials, set her proposal apart. This open materialization aspect was considered important in evaluating the applications and is expected to greatly benefit the final formalization and construction of the work.

Sofia Mascate holds a degree in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, an MFA from HFBK Hamburg, and a master’s degree in Critical Studies from the Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien. She has had several solo exhibitions and participated in numerous collective shows.

The artist will now have access to a wealth of knowledge, techniques, and materials, which could lead to new directions in her artistic practices while making use of the laboratory environment provided by ArtWorks.

Umbigo and ArtWorks express their gratitude to the juries and all the artists who took part in this call for proposals and extend their best wishes to everyone for the future.
