The 2nd Art and Technology Biennial INDEX, from 9th to 19th May, in Braga

The second edition of the Art and Technology Biennial INDEX will take place in Braga from 9 to 19 May 2024, with an extensive programme dedicated to the concept of Coexistence. As part of the city’s plan of activities as a UNESCO Creative City in the field of Digital Arts and the programme of celebrations for the 50th anniversary of 25 April, the Biennial proposes an intertwining of art, technology, freedom and democracy.

During INDEX 2024, the doors of Theatro Circo, gnration, Mosteiro de Tibães, Museu Nogueira da Silva and Galeria do Paço will open for eleven days of reflection on the practice of technological innovation in the exercise of citizenship, in the creation of sustainable and inclusive ecosystems, and in the development of new political possibilities. As in the previous edition, the programme is based around four axes: Performance, Conferences, Exhibition and Education.

Inaugurated by Ryoji Ikeda’s audiovisual show ultratronics, the Performance programme includes the national premiere of the artists Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Elías Merino and Tadej Droljc, dmstfctn, Kode9 and a performance by the Electronic Devices Orchestra and the Berklee College of Music in Valencia. On the axis of Conferences, INDEX presents a series of conferences with the participation of various thinkers and artists, including Frédéric Neyrat and Teresa Castro, with “Ecologies of coexistence”, Nestor Pestana and Filipa Correia, with “Human-artificial coexistences”, Gustavo Cardoso, Nikolas Leontopoulos and Paulo Pena, with “Technology and the public sphere: what coexistences? “, and Ellen Lima Wassu, who presents the talk “The forest as ancestral technology: an encounter with indigenous literature”. The Exhibition programme brings together projects that reflect sensitivity and imagination as disruptive gestures and forms of resistance. Guest artists include Jonas Staal, Kyriaki Goni, Bethan Hughes, DISNOVATION.ORG, Luísa Tormenta, Sasha Litvintseva and Nestor Pestana.

In partnership with Circuito – Braga Media Arts Educational Service, free activities are also planned to strengthen the relationship between the programme and the local community. This programme of mediation includes numerous guided tours of the Biennale’s exhibition programme, led by artist and mediator Joana Patrão, and the masterclass “Compositional process in SYNSPECIES”, in which Elías Merino and Tadej Droljc will share the creative process behind their audiovisual project.

The full programme can be found on the INDEX website.
