5 Cultural Suggestions – HuBB Humans Before Borders
Twice a month, UMBIGO invites one person to share their 5 cultural suggestions. What can we do at home? From a book to a podcast, album or film: here are recommendations from artists, curators, gallery owners, cultural activists, friends.
We will share the recipe for what makes us better, and we remain united and positive.
Netflix (Christina Clusiau; Shaul Schwarz)
Immigration Nation is a 2020 Netflix documentary miniseries, directed by Christina Clusiau and Shaul Schwarz. The series consists of footage from 2017 to 2020 of the work of the American institution Immigration and Customs Enforcement (or ICE – the equivalent of the Portuguese SEF) during the Trump era. This documentary clearly demonstrates the inhuman and cruel policies implemented by the institution.
Aquilo é a Europa [Only in Portuguese]
A series of audio journalism produced by the Fumaça team and according to themselves a story about Europe Fortaleza. In this series, we hear in the first person the story of those who risk everything in search of a dignified life, fleeing extreme poverty and torture. In That is Europe, we see how Europe enters into expensive and dubious agreements to prevent people from crossing its borders, while in some countries gold visas are offered.
In the Presence of Absence
A work, by the Palestinian writer and poet Mahmoud Darwish, that defies categorization and was written when the author was aware that his death was already imminent. Thus, Darwish gathered his strength to write this self-elegy of opposites: prose and poetry, life and death, home and exile in which the poet reflects on his existence, intertwined with that of his people. Through these lyrical meditations on love, longing, Palestine, history, friendship, family and the ongoing conversation between life and death, the poet offers himself and his readers a moving farewell.
Racismo no País dos Brancos Costumes [Only in Portuguese]
Joana Gorjão Henriques
A book by journalist Joana Gorjão Henriques that tells real stories of racism in Portugal in four broad categories: justice, education, housing and employment. In this excellent journalistic work, the author reports with interviews and facts resulting from her research acts of violence and discrimination in a country that refuses to recognize its prejudices.
A virtual photo exhibition by Yannis Hamilakis, based on his fieldwork in Lesbos, Greece. The exhibition was held at the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology at Brown University in the United States and due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was organized in a virtual way. In this exhibition, we can see images that characterize the changes on the Greek island, the dangerous crossings and life in the refugee camp of Moria.
HuBB Humans Before Borders is a platform for action against the inhuman and illegal treatment of migrants and refugees. We are a group of citizens who want to remind the European Union of its fundamental values: the Declaration of Human Rights, including among others the right to asylum. HuBB was born in September 2018 from a desire to bring reliable information to the sphere of political debate. Since then, we have organized events, created awareness campaigns and collaborated with human rights experts with a focus on border and refugee topics. We are united by the belief that individual actions make a difference and that collective action can change the world.
