Twice a month, UMBIGO invites one person to share their 5 cultural suggestions. What can we do at home? From a book to a podcast, album or film: here are recommendations from artists, curators, gallery owners, cultural activists, friends.

We will share the recipe for what makes us better, and we remain united and positive.

Albums

Rolê Nas Ruínas
2020

Debut album by Mateus Fazeno Rock released in 2020. I call special attention to the video clip of the 6th track entitled Melô do Djavan. Musically with grunge influences – the direct reference of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit, for example, points out in the lyrics the structural racism of a ruined world. The clip, shot with a cell phone, incorporates the maximum punk: do it yourself. Or, in Matthew’s verses “I do as I can, I almost can’t, I do it anyway…”. Album & Clip

STAXXTS.E
2020

Tenth studio album of the URO project – made seven other live albums with other artists. URO, which has existed since 2000, is a project by Uirá Dos Reis that integrates poetry, installation, performance and music. Uirá Dos reis, among other things, has published several poetry books, co-directed the feature film Doce Amianto and directed a series of short films, in addition to having acted in several films. Within the constellation of Uirá Dos Reis’ work, this album invites us to listen to it repeatedly and stop to listen carefully to all the others. Albums

Brô Mcs
2017

The album and the group Brô MCs sing in Portuguese and Guarani the resistance of the Guarani Kaiow indigenous peoples. The members, Bruno Veron, Kelvin Peixoto, Clemersom Batista, Charlie Peixoto who live in the Jaguapir and Boror villages, in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, a region of Brazil where agribusiness is spreading and decimating indigenous peoples. Brô Mcs point to ethnocide in their lyrics and electronic beats. Album

Catalog
Pernambuco Experimental

Catalog of the homonymous exhibition held at the Museu de Arte do Rio has texts by Clarissa Diniz (curator and also organizer of the catalog), Adolfo Montejo Navas, Zanna Gilbert, José Cláudio and Jomard Muniz de Britto. It presents a patient and precise research of Pernambuco production between the 1900s and 1980s that reposition us in the face of Brazilian modernism. I call attention to the Pernambuco music scene included in the exhibition with Ave Sangria, Flaviola, Lula Côrtes, among others.
