Umbigo @ ARCOmadrid 2020
Now for the third consecutive year, Umbigo once again shall be present at ARCOmadrid with its own booth.
Following suit of the previous two years, in which the booth was host to works by artists Jorge Santos, Rita Gaspar Vieira, and Nuno Sousa Vieira, this year Umbigo invited artist Ana Perez-Quiroga to create a work for this.
For this, Perez-Quiroga will present her work ¿De que casa eres? (2019).
¿De que casa eres? – What house are you from? References a common question asked among the Spanish children that lived (or continue to do so) for 19 years, from 1937 to 1956, in Russia – a consequence of the exile of 2895 republican children to, what was at the time, the Soviet Union. The question posits itself within this specific, involuntary diaspora – placing one within a liminal state of being in which one belongs neither here, nor there, but rather, nowhere. Exile forces one into a state of perpetual estrangement; always foreign, always stranger, making the construction of one´s identity beyond disorientating.
Organized by IFEMA, ARCOmadrid returns this year to celebrate its 39th edition, and is set to present a total of 209 galleries from 30 countries. Once again, its main axis, the General Program, is comprised of 171 galleries selected by the Organizing Committee, which have added them as curated sections. The fair continues to develop upon its desire for research and innovation, operating within the central theme: It’s Just a Matter of Time, curated by Alejandro Cesarco and Mason Leaver-Yap (with Manuel Segade in the public program, comprising 13 artists from 11 galleries), the concept for the section arriving from the artistic practice and work of Félix González-Torres.
On the 26th February, Umbigo will host a cocktail, with support of Casa da Carvalha at the booth 9R03, at 6pm.
ARCOmadrid 2020 runs from February 26 to March 1 at IFEMA, Madrid.
