Umbigo @ ARCOmadrid 2019
Once again, Umbigo is going to be present at ARCOmadrid, with its own booth and the presentation of UmbigoLAB – Social Network for Art.
Like last year, in which the magazine individual booth was intervened by the artist Jorge Santos, Umbigo has now challenged the artists Rita Gaspar Vieira and Nuno Sousa Vieira to develop specific projects for this occasion.
Sobrecapa (2019), by Rita Gaspar Vieira, works with the appropriation of documental material, which, in this case, came from this magazine (Umbigo), to establish bonds between the ideas of cover and skin, and intimacy and book overlay. According to the artist, “the information that is available on the book overlay is closer to the spectator, from a hierarchical point of view, and, in this sense, it constitutes an approximation and a touch, undertaken in the direction of the spectator”. It is both object and action or, in other words, Rita sees the magazine as a space and a body to build new ideas, using materials such as manufactured cotton paper, water, sticks from pruning, and textile strings, a materiality that finds its echo on the performance that will take place on 27 February, at 6 p.m., at the magazine’s booth.
For its part, Nuno Sousa Vieira designed two works of art, You are in a dangerous position and Spectrum, and a postal card which was created in partnership with the magazine. Recalling the naval imagery and language, You are in a dangerous position (2013) integrates two flags with two characters, N and G, which refer to the artwork’s title state of alertness and dangerousness. Spectrum (2013), on the other hand, refers to the astrophysics and the explanation of the phenomena that informs the title. According to the artist, “in the image that illustrates that event, three men see their shadow projected on the clouds, which constitutes the possibility of each one of us seeing, before ourselves, our own image but on an astronomical dimension”.
With respect to UmbigoLAB, on 1 Mach, in the Pavilion 9, booth 9J05, there will be the presentation of this digital platform for artists, curators, and agents of the arts, which will also be open to all the enthusiasts and interested people, with the support of Millenium BCP Foundation (Fundação Millenium BCP). The program includes the following speakers: Fátima Dias, the foundation representative; Elsa Garcia and António Néu, who are the directors of Umbigo; the curator Inês Grosso; and, lastly, Rita Gaspar Vieira and Nuno Sousa Vieira, the artists previously mentioned.
